Reflection inspired by Pope Francis’ Message for World Mission Day 2025

At the heart of the missionary call lies a Person: Jesus Christ, our living hope. From the synagogue of Nazareth to the Cross on Calvary, he reveals the face of the Father’s mercy and the power of a hope that never fades. His entire life was a mission of healing, reconciliation, and trust in God’s saving plan. In the “today” of salvation, Jesus continues to walk through the streets of our world, bending over the wounded, the poor, and the forgotten, whispering words of consolation to hearts darkened by despair. To follow him is to walk in this same spirit of compassion, becoming signs of hope wherever humanity suffers.Christ remains the wellspring of our hope, and he will never deprive us of the help we need to carry out the mission he entrusts to us. In his footsteps, we are called to share the Good News by sharing life itself. Hope grows when it is shared. Christians are not passive recipients of good news but bearers and builders of hope among all peoples. We proclaim the Gospel not only with words but through closeness, compassion, and tenderness — the very style of God.

Mission today means standing beside the lonely and weary, listening to the cry of creation, and accompanying the poor and excluded. Every act of mercy, every gesture of tenderness, every effort to restore human dignity becomes a seed of the Kingdom, a spark of divine hope that transforms the world from within. “The joys and hopes, the grief and anguish of the people of our time… are the joys and hopes, the grief and anguish of the followers of Christ.” To be a missionary of hope is to make another’s burden our own and to discover Christ waiting in each wounded heart.

This hope is not sustained by strength or strategy but by prayer. A missionary without prayer is a worker without breath. In prayer — especially in the Eucharist and the Psalms — we rediscover the courage to hope and the tenderness to serve. Prayer turns our gaze toward God’s promise and teaches us to see his light even in the midst of darkness. Like Cardinal François-Xavier Van Thuan, who found freedom in faith behind prison walls, every Christian is invited to become a “prisoner of hope” — one whose heart remains open to God’s future even when everything seems lost. “The person who hopes is a person who prays.”

Every mission begins with a yes like Mary’s. In her, hope took flesh. She teaches us to listen, to trust, and to walk in faith even when the path is hidden. As Mother of the Church and Star of Evangelization, she accompanies us in this Jubilee Year, guiding us to make Christ’s hope shine in every corner of the earth. “May the light of Christian hope illumine every man and woman as a message of God’s love addressed to all.”

Prayer

Lord Jesus, Missionary of the Father’s love,
make us witnesses of your hope.
Teach us to speak your Word with courage,
to touch wounds with tenderness,
to pray with perseverance,
and to walk humbly with all peoples.

May our lives proclaim that hope does not disappoint,
because your love has been poured into our hearts.
Amen.

To hope and to act are two essential attitudes of every Christian. In the words of Pope Francis (Message of His Holiness Pope Francis for the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation), it means “to live an incarnational faith, one that can enter into the suffering and hope-filled “flesh” of others, by sharing in the expectation of the bodily resurrection to which believers are predestined in Christ the Lord” (n.9). It is important that we keep asking ourselves these questions: „Where, when, and how are we to bear that witness? Surely by caring for the flesh of suffering humanity. As people who dare to dream, we must dream with our eyes wide open, impelled by a desire for love, fraternity, friendship and justice for all. Christian salvation enters into the depths of the world’s suffering, which embraces not only humanity but also the entire universe, nature itself, and the oikos, the home and living environment of humanity” (n.2) „In our hopeful and persevering expectation of the glorious return of Jesus, the Holy Spirit keeps us, the community of believers, vigilant; he continually guides us and calls us to conversion, to a change in lifestyle in order to resist the degradation of our environment and to engagement in that social critique which is above all a witness to the real possibility of change” (n.5) Therefore, let us not only pray and hope inactively, but let us accept the challenge of concrete actions that many times has to begin with changing our own lifestyle, mentality, especially the way we understand and exercise power over our brothers and sisters and over creation. It is a long process, and „the beginnings are tiny, but the expected results can prove to be infinite in their beauty” (n.3). It starts with you and me, here and now, when we decide to HOPE AND ACT WITH CREATION.

The garden of Carmel is filled with variety of trees and flowers that keep bearing fruits of holiness. Today we are given the figure of St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross to learn from her journey and get some courage to follow Jesus more closely on the way of prayer and mission.

Pope Francis has proposed to the whole Church to dedicate this year to prayer in preparation for the Jubilee of 2025. As he expresses in his message: “Prayer is the breath of faith, it is its most proper expression. It is like a silent cry that comes from the heart of those who believe and trust in God. With the Jubilee at the door, we are invited to become more humble and to make room for the prayer that comes from the Holy Spirit”.

In this brief writing I would like to highlight some features of Edith Stein’s spirituality that illustrate her profound experience of prayer. She hardly speaks of her own prayer, but her works reveal her prayerful experience. The list of enlightening texts would be endless, so I will only dwell on a few of them.

First of all, I will share one that strikes me because she wrote it a few years before her entry into the Catholic Church:

“There is a state of repose in God, of complete relaxation of all spiritual activity, in which no plans of any kind are made, no resolutions are adopted, and still less action is taken, but everything future is placed in the hands of the divine will […]. There is now the feeling of being accepted, of being freed from all concern and responsibility and obligation to act. And when I give myself to this feeling, it begins to fill me little by little with new life and impels me again – without any tension of the will – to new activity. This vivifying influx appears as an efflux of an activity and an energy which are not mine, and which act in me without imposing demands on mine. The only presupposition for such a spiritual rebirth seems to be a certain receptive capacity” (Psychic Causality. 1918).

In this reflection that Edith makes we can appreciate traits and attitudes of every prayerful person: the rest in God that comes from trusting in Him, the experience of feeling welcomed by Him, the interior renewal that this encounter with Him supposes, the realization of the free gift that constitutes this “vivifying influx that acts in me without imposing demands on mine”, the need to be open to the gift… Edith is able to express everything that a prayerful person experiences in this “friendship” that is prayer, in the words of St. Teresa of Jesus.

Edith is an authentic and experienced person of prayer when she expresses in one of her conferences: “He (Jesus) is not only waiting for us to seek Him, He is continually searching for us and He comes to meet us” (Difficult times and formation). Likewise, she possesses a great clairvoyance when she writes already as a Discalced Carmelite: “We must pray, not to communicate something to God, but in order to prepare ourselves for what God wants to communicate to us” (Exercises 1937. Personal notes).

Edith gives the same importance to personal prayer as to liturgical prayer, as she refers in this writing: “it is not a question of opposing interior prayer, free from all traditional forms, as “subjective” piety, to the liturgy as “objective” prayer of the Church. All authentic prayer is the prayer of the Church, and it is the Church herself who prays there, because it is the Holy Spirit who lives in her, who intercedes for us in every soul with ineffable groanings” (The Prayer of the Church).

We know that Edith frequented the Benedictine abbey of Beuron, one of the important centers of the liturgical movement that she nourished and contributed as much as she could to spread in her writings. In one of her conferences, given on the occasion of the Jubilee of the 900th anniversary of the cathedral of Speyer, she said: “He waits for us to take up all our burdens, to console us, to counsel us, to help us as the most faithful and permanent friend. He also allows us to live his life, especially when we join in the liturgy . There we relive his life, suffering, death, resurrection, ascension, the birth and growth of the Church. We will be lifted above the narrowness of our being, His mentality will be our mentality, His business will be ours, we will be pushed to co-sacrifice ourselves in His sacrifice, to live our whole life for Him . We grow in Him, indissolubly united to Him and in Him with all His. All solitude disappears, we are incontestably welcomed in the tent of the King, we walk in his light”. (Eucharistic Education).

In this sense, she gave a conference addressed to the Catholic Women’s Association of Zurich, in which she affirmed: “Whoever lives with the holy Church and in her liturgy, that is, whoever lives in a truly Catholic way, finds herself linked to the great human community, finds everywhere brothers and sisters united with her in the most intimate way. And, since from every person who is in God’s hand streams of living water flow, she exerts a mysterious force of attraction on thirsty souls; without intending to do so, she must become a guide for others who seek the light, exercise spiritual motherhood, and create and attract sons and daughters for the kingdom of God.” (Christian Life of Woman).

Aware of the free gift of prayer, she declared in a conference addressed to the Catholic Union of German Women Teachers: “Every time we enter a church, what an immense gift it is that we come to the Lord and that we can speak to Him as to our most faithful and loving friend”. (Difficult Times and Formation). She is probably evoking the event that so impressed her when she entered the cathedral in Frankfurt and saw a simple woman with a shopping basket praying.

Edith knows the difficulties of the person of prayer to find time dedicated to the Lord and, in this sense, she writes: “When we get up in the morning, the duties and worries of the day already want to flood us everywhere (and this in the case that they have not prevented us from sleeping). Then the restless question arises: how can all this be done in one day, when am I going to do this, when am I going to do that, and how should I do this and that? As if convulsed, one should shudder and run away. Then it is necessary to take the bridles in hand, and say: Slow down! In spite of everything, none of that goes with me now. My first hour of the morning belongs to the Lord. The work that He entrusts to me I want to do. And He will give me the strength to do it”. (Fundamentals of Women’s Formation).

She also encourages us to enter into this path of prayer, of authentic discipleship: “In our daily relationship with the Savior, our sensitivity to perceive what pleases Him and what does not please Him grows each day […]. Finally, we also learn to accept ourselves as we are in the inexorable light of the divine presence and to abandon ourselves to the mercy of God, who can reach everything of which our own strength is incapable”. (The Mystery of Christmas).

The reading of these texts of Edith Stein can reveal glimpses of the prayer of our Carmelite sister, who lived with passion that search and encounter with “the one who loves us so much”.

In a stirring display of unity and faith, concerned citizens gathered at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Sariaya, Quezon, to kickstart the Alay-Lakad Dasal—an initiative aimed at halting quarry operations near Mt. Banahaw and other vital areas in Quezon Province.

The event, which commenced with a solemn Eucharist presided over by Reverend Fr. Warren Puno, Director of the Diocese of Lucena Ministry of Ecology, drew in church leaders, environmentalists, representatives from Catholic schools, religious figures, laypersons, and local residents of Sariaya.

During his impassioned homily, Rev. Fr. Raul Enriquez, an environmentalist and another priest who co-presided the mass, delivered a poignant message, encapsulating the spirit of the gathering: “If we cannot sue them in court, then let’s bring them to the ‘holy court’.” His words resonated deeply with those in attendance, igniting a fervent determination to protect the natural treasures of Quezon Province through spiritual and communal action.

Following the Eucharist, participants united in solidarity as they first presented their petition to the municipality government, urging them to take action to halt the quarry operations. With banners held high and prayers on their lips, they carried with them a Collective plea for the preservation of the environment and the well-being of their communities.

“Stop! Enough! This is the cry of the people,” echoed throughout the halls of municipal offices, resonating with the urgency and determination of those assembled.

After their meeting with the municipality officials, the assembled group proceeded to the quarry site in Lagnas, Sariaya, Quezon. With unwavering resolve, they made it clear that the preservation of Quezon Province’s natural heritage is a matter of paramount importance—one that transcends political boundaries and personal interests.

At the quarry site, amidst the echoes of chanting and prayers, the assembled voices raised their concerns once again, urging the municipality government to heed their call for action. With the support of local leaders, environmentalists, and concerned citizens, the Alay-Lakad Dasal serves as a powerful testament to the strength of community spirit and the unwavering commitment to safeguarding the environment for future generations.

For its tenth year, the Philippine Conference on New Evangelization (PCNE X) with the theme “Salya! Let Us Cross to the Other Side” (Mk 4:35) from Jan. 19-21, 2024. CMT sisters, Sr. Sharon Villafranca, cmt, Sr. Chrezann Angulo, cmt, Sr. Shiela Alcantara, ncmt and staff of Sr. Teresa of Sto. Niño Center, Ms. Marian Seychelle Royola and Ms. Shaina Twain Enverga– Xperienced the synodality of everyone in the 3-day seminar/workshop at the Royal and Pontifical University of Santo Tomas Quadricentennial Pavilion. The theme Salya! mainly focuses on the synod of the synodal Church which is an experience of journey by walking together to the other side.

PCNE DAY 1 | Traslacion of the Nazareno

The first day started off with the Filipino tradition of Quiapo’s Traslacion of the Poong Nazareno before the celebration of the Eucharistic mass presided by His Eminence Cardinal Jose Advincula, Archbishop of Manila, PCNE Chairman. He invited us to reflect on the two practices of the Nazareno devotees as our symbols of synodality: salya! or pressing forth and crossing over, the meaning of the word Traslacion in Spanish which is crossing over, pagtawid, pagpapaibayo. While during the perspective setting, Fr. Jason Laguerta, PCNE Director, said that the attendees should have their own point of view of the theme, find our voices and selves and not just rely on his own perspective. He said that Salya is an invitation, but as often the case, it is a forceful call, it is pwersa, it is force, for us not to stagnate or to give up. Salya is a call full of energy. This was then followed by a keynote address about a synodal Church in Mission by His Eminence Cardinal Maria Grech, Secretary- General of the Synod. He shared to us that the content of synodality has three points (1) Facilitate deep listening – that we learn by listening with humility and appreciation, (2) It is a shared responsibility and mission of the Church and (3) Synodality is co-responsibility – everyone has a full and equal participation.
During the afternoon activity, we get to hear a “Heart-to-Heart talk about the Synodal Experience” facilitated by His Eminence Cardinal Luis Tagle together with the four guest panelists namely: Cardinal Jose Advincula, Bishop Pablo Virgilio David, Bishop Mylo Hubert Vergara and Dra. Estela Padilla. The day ended with a very abundant and enriching listening experience for all of us attendees.

PCNE DAY 2 | Nuestra Señora de la Paz y Buen Viaje de Antipolo

The day started with the enthronement of the Nuestra Señora dela Paz y Buen Viaje de Antipolo. Sr. Althea Alfonso, SPC, shared to all of us her devotion, testament and journey on how the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage had changed her life. This was then followed by a Eucharistic Celebration celebrated by Cardinal Mario Grech. He shared in his homily that for if we are Christians, which means disciples of Christ, or better, Christ-like, then that means that the word existence should also describe our lives and our existence.
The morning session then started with a recap of what had happened during the first day, as well as a “Bahaginan sa Diwang Banal” or sharing the spiritual encounter wherein Dra. Estela Padilla shared to us the three major key points of listening: (1) Sharing from the heart -to give one’s voice and experience; (2) Lifting the voice of the others where we move from “I” to “we”; and (3) Building together wherein we asked ourselves “where is the Holy spirit leading us to?”. After this, the morning session concluded by breaking into groups we were registered into, particularly we joined the afternoon concurrent seminar and audiam sessions with the topics, Women, Family, and Digital/social media. Our day ended with the blessing of the body through a prayer ritual, a prayer invites the Holy Spirit to operate within us so that we may be a community and a people of grace.

PCNE DAY 3 | Sinulog

In the last day of the seminar/workshop, the program was also cut into two parts. During the morning session, the infamous Sinulog, a dance ritual performed during the Feast of the Sto. Niño in Cebu was brought to the Pavillion. Through a rhythmic dance movements and shouts of “Pit Señor!” that participants engage in during the celebration. After this, representatives per topics of seminar that happened during day 2 had a deepening for the concurrent workshop. Each representative synthesized the audiam sessions’ result and shared it for everyone to hear.
During the afternoon, we enjoyed a concert wherein various guest artists performed their talents through singing and dancing in praising the goodness and grace of God. After such exhilarating performances, a traditional Filipino mass was celebrated by His Eminence Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle. In his homily, he questions us- what is the correlation of the celebration of Santo Niño, the Child Jesus between synodality? Cardinal Tagle tells us that the incarnation of the eternal Word of God born us a child is a kenosis of the eternal word in order to be one of us. Jesus being a child is a proof that His life started as a baby, a human – where He journeyed together with us. In His humility He was prepared to walk with us. this is the synodal path opened to us by the child Jesus, that synodality is walking together in humility, when God walks, He walks humbly. Remain a child and walk with God. Jesus taught us that the synodal path you walk with others but we always walk with our Father in heaven, a path always directed by the Father.

The three-day seminar-workshop is truly a fruitful, valuable and enriching experience. The synodal path is a humble walk, with people and God, an experience with the kingdom of God. Three days filled with listening with heart to the point of conversion and understanding. As what Cardinal Tagle had reminded us, let the Child Jesus always remind us that He became and remained humble to walk together with us. Let us not be the obstacle for many to walk with Jesus, but let us be the one to walk with them and cross to the other side.

In coordination with the Municipal Environment Office (MENRO) and Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO) of Sariaya, we were invited to witness and set free the baby sea turtles.

According to Mr. Edwin Frias, one of the “Bantay-Dagat Officers,” this was the 5th time that they released sea turtles along the bay. This batch was laid out by their mother around 1:00 AM at the seashore. After the sea turtle laid eggs, the Bantay-Dagat Officer carefully searched, picked them up, and put them in the little hatchery that they made to protect them and make sure they would be hatched. After 12 hours, they needed to go back to their natural habitat, which is the sea.

It was said that after 25 years, they would go back to the place where they were born. For this to happen, the message that God wants to convey to us is that we need to preserve and nurture the environment, the land, and the waters because they are our common home and God has entrusted them to us. “Humans are commanded to care for God’s creation.” [Gen 2:15]

Apostle of the Apostles

“Apostle of the Apostles” is the title given Mary Magdalene by St Thomas Aquinas. Her name comes from her home town of Magdala, a fishing village on the western shore of Lake Tiberias. St Luke the Evangelist tells us, in Chapter 8 of his Gospel, how Jesus went from town to town announcing the Good News of the Kingdom of God, and how the Twelve Apostles were with Him together with some women who had been healed of evil spirits or infirmities, and were serving them. Among these was a certain “Mary, called the Magdalene, from whom seven demons came out.”

Misconceptions about her identity: she was not a prostitute

As Biblical exegesis teaches, the expression ‘seven demons’ could indicate a serious physical or moral malady that had struck the woman and from which Jesus had freed her. But, until now, tradition has claimed that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. This is only because in Chapter 7 of Luke’s Gospel we read of the conversion of an anonymous “known sinner in that city” who, when Jesus was a guest in the house of a notable Pharisee, bathed His feet with perfume and her tears and dried them with her hair.” Without any real textual connection, Mary of Magdala was identified with that unnamed prostitute. But, according to Cardinal Ravasi, there is a further misunderstanding: anointing with perfumed oil is a gesture that was also performed by Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, on a different occasion, as reported by the Evangelist, St John. And so, in some popular traditions, Mary Magdalene has come to be identified with this Mary of Bethany, after being confused with the prostitute of Galilee.

At the foot of the cross

Mary Magdalene appears in the Gospels in the most dramatic moment of Jesus’ life, when she accompanies Him to Calvary and, along with other women, observes Him from afar. She is still there when Joseph of Arimathea places the body of Jesus in the sepulcher, which is closed with a stone. And on the morning of the first day of the week, she returns to the tomb, finds the stone rolled away, and runs to warn Peter and John. They in turn hurry to the empty tomb and discover that the body of the Lord is missing.

Meeting with the Risen Lord

The two disciples return home but Mary Magdalene remains at the tomb in tears. Her initial disbelief gradually turns to faith when she sees two angels and asks them if they know where Jesus’ body has been taken. Then she sees Jesus Himself, but fails to recognize Him. She thinks He is the gardener, and when He asks why she is crying and who she is looking for, she replies: “Sir, if you have taken Him away, tell me where you have put Him and I will go and remove Him.” But Jesus says her name, “Mary” – and she recognizes Him at once: “Rabbuni!”, she says, which in Hebrew means “Master!”. Jesus then tells her: “Do not cling to me because I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go and find the brothers and to tell them I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.” So Mary Magdalene goes to the disciples and tells them she has seen the Lord and that He said these things to her. (cf. John 20).

She announces Jesus’ Resurrection from the dead.

Mary Magdalene is the first among the women following Jesus to proclaim Him as having overcome death. She is the first to announce the joyful message of Easter. But she also proved she was among those who loved Him most when she stood at the foot of the Cross on Mount Calvary together with Mary, His Mother, and the disciple, St. John. She did not deny him or run away in fear as the other disciples did, but remained close to Him every moment, up to and including the tomb.
