Isn’t that how faith often feels? Sometimes God seems absent, prayers feel unanswered, and hope appears lost. Like Mary, we may find ourselves standing before an “empty tomb” in our own lives—unsure, afraid, and searching for meaning.

So what is the message of Easter Sunday for us today?

It is the news that something has happened. Jesus, who died on the cross, has risen. He has broken the power of death. God’s love is stronger than death itself.

The empty tomb is the first sign. It does not explain everything in a simple way, but it points to a deeper truth: God is at work even when everything seems finished, lost, or hopeless. The stone—a symbol of finality—has been rolled away. Death does not have the last word.

Today’s Gospel invites us to reflect on how we follow Jesus. Easter is not only about what happened, but also about why it matters. It calls us to examine what drives us, what we choose, and why we act as we do. This is how we grow in spiritual awareness and become more fully who God created us to be.

Like the disciples, we often stand before signs of new life without full understanding or proof. Yet Easter invites us into trust. The empty tomb speaks quietly but powerfully.

Like Mary Magdalene, we are called to move—from fear to trust, from confusion to faith, from mourning to mission. Peter and the beloved disciple run to the tomb. They see, and slowly they begin to believe—not because everything is clear, but because something has changed. The absence in the tomb becomes a presence of hope.

In our lives, “tombs” can take many forms: broken relationships, lost opportunities, fears about the future, or burdens we carry in silence. Easter does not deny these realities—it transforms them.

Easter reminds us that hope is never truly buried. The stone that was rolled away from Jesus’ tomb is also rolled away from our fears, our failures, and even the parts of ourselves we think are beyond redemption.

The Resurrection tells us that endings are not final—they are often the beginning of something we cannot yet see.

So this Easter Sunday, take a moment of stillness. Listen. The miracle is not only that Christ is risen—it is that resurrection continues, quietly, within us.

The message of today’s Gospel is this: hope is stronger than despair. No matter how dark things may seem, God is already at work.

New life can come from unexpected places. What feels like an ending may, in fact, be a beginning.

Like the beloved disciple, we are called to see and believe—even when the full picture is not yet clear. Easter reminds us that God’s greatest works often begin where we see nothing.

In the mentality of that time, suffering and illness were often interpreted as the consequence of sin. But Jesus challenges this way of thinking. He declares that the man’s blindness is not the result of sin:
“Neither this man nor his parents sinned; it is so that the works of God might be made visible through him.” (Jn 9:3).

Through this response, Jesus reveals the merciful face of God. God is not a God who punishes by causing suffering. Rather, He is a God whose love and power can transform suffering into an opportunity for grace. Jesus also proclaims His mission clearly:
“While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” (Jn 9:5).

Another important question soon follows. After the man is healed, people ask him:
“How were your eyes opened?” (Jn 9:10).

The man answers with disarming simplicity:
“The man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and told me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed, and then I could see.” (Jn 9:11).

The same question is repeated by the Pharisees. They are troubled not only by the miracle but also because the healing happened on the Sabbath. Their confusion grows, and they begin to interrogate the man, and even his parents. Yet the healed man remains calm and sincere. His testimony becomes one of the most powerful statements in the Gospel:
“I was blind, but now I see.” (Jn 9:25).

Despite this clear testimony, the Pharisees remain trapped in what could be called mental or spiritual blindness. Their certainty about their own knowledge prevents them from recognizing the truth before them. They question, accuse, and debate, yet they fail to see what has happened.

Finally, Jesus encounters the healed man again and asks him a decisive question:
“Do you believe in the Son of Man?” (Jn 9:35).

The man responds with a confession of faith:
“Lord, I believe.” (Jn 9:38).

At the beginning of the Gospel, Jesus proclaimed that He is the Light of the world. At the end, He explains the deeper meaning of His mission:
“I came into this world for judgment, so that those who do not see might see, and those who see might become blind.” (Jn 9:39).

When the Pharisees hear this, they take it personally. Jesus replies with a challenging truth:
“If you were blind, you would not have sin; but now you say, ‘We see,’ so your sin remains.” (Jn 9:41).

The Gospel of John often uses powerful symbols—light, darkness, blindness, and sight. The same Jesus who gives sight to the blind also reveals the blindness of those who refuse to believe.

Blessed Francisco Palau, OCD, reflects a similar experience in his spiritual writings, especially in My Relations with the Church. Many times he speaks about searching for his beloved, the Church, even when he could not see her clearly. He writes:

“At last, after forty years in search of you, I found you. I found you because you came to meet me; I found you because you allowed yourself to be known. If you had not revealed yourself, you would have disappeared from among mortals without relating with me.” (M.R. 22,17)

In a sense, Palau experienced a form of spiritual “blindness”—a deep longing and searching without fully seeing. Yet this longing kept him moving forward until the moment of encounter. Like the healed blind man in the Gospel, his faith grew through the journey of seeking.

This Gospel invites us to reflect on several important realities. It calls us to pray for the innocent who suffer. It challenges us to examine our own spiritual blindness. And it encourages us to become instruments of God’s light in the world.

Like the man who was healed, we are invited to recognize the work of God in our lives. And like Blessed Francisco Palau, we are called to continue searching for Christ with perseverance—finding Him especially in the vulnerable and those in need.

May the Light of Christ open our eyes, deepen our faith, and guide us to serve Him more faithfully each day.

As we continue our journey through the third week of Lent, the readings invite us to reflect on the many forms of human thirst—both physical and spiritual. These thirsts create tension within us, but they can also lead us to deeper encounters with God.

In the first reading, we see the people of Israel in the desert. Their initial joy at being freed from slavery soon fades as they face the harsh reality of the wilderness. Water is scarce, and their physical thirst leads them to complain and grumble against Moses and even against God. They ask, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

Moses had desired only to lead the Israelites out of slavery, yet along the journey their faith is tested. In the dry place of Meribah, where frustration and doubt grow, God responds not with punishment but with mercy. From a rock in the desert, abundant water flows.

Often we experience something similar in our own lives. Even when God gives us great opportunities or blessings, we sometimes focus more on difficulties and shortcomings. Like the Israelites, we can become thirsty for immediate comfort, for worldly satisfaction, while our thirst for God remains secondary.

The question for us is: How can we awaken a deeper thirst for God?

In the second reading, Saint Paul reminds us that our relationship with God begins with a transformation. Through faith, we are justified and reconciled with Him. We are invited to leave behind our infidelity and rest in the assurance that we are loved—not because of what we have done, but because of who God is. His love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.

The Gospel presents one of the most profound encounters in Scripture: the meeting of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well.

This story beautifully explores the meaning of thirst. The woman comes to the well at the hottest hour of the day, when no one else would normally draw water. Perhaps she wanted to avoid meeting others. Perhaps she feared judgment and wished to remain unseen. She may have been carrying not only a jar for water but also the burden of shame.

Yet when she arrives, Jesus is already there, waiting.

In this encounter, the one who asks for water—Jesus—has no bucket. He expresses His physical thirst. Meanwhile, the woman who carries the jar is spiritually thirsty, longing for peace and acceptance. Jesus gently opens the parts of her life she had tried to hide. Instead of running away, she stays and listens. She realizes that she is standing before someone who truly sees her—someone who knows her story yet does not condemn her.

Through this encounter, her deepest thirst begins to be quenched.

The woman who came seeking water leaves transformed. She experiences freedom, dignity, and peace. The living water offered by Jesus fills her heart.

Fr. Francisco Palau also experienced a deep spiritual thirst throughout his life—a longing for the Church, whom he loved as the Bride of Christ. Like the Israelites wandering in the wilderness, Fr. Palau passed through many deserts, facing accusations and misunderstanding. At times he too became the “talk of the town.”

Yet in those moments, he encountered his own Meribah and Massah—places where God’s grace flowed abundantly. In his deep love for the Church, he discovered the well of living water that filled his life with meaning and freedom. His jar, so to speak, was filled to the brim with the living water of God’s love.

During this Lenten season, may we become more aware of our own thirst for God. Often it is in the simplest and most ordinary moments of life that God waits for us—just as Jesus waited at the well.

May we recognize that He is already there, ready to offer us the living water that alone can truly satisfy our hearts.

Queen of Carmel Community

Placing myself in the situation of these three disciples, I imagine how unexpected and overwhelming that moment must have been. After following Jesus for some time, perhaps they thought they already knew Him. Yet on that mountain, they witnessed something entirely new — the radiant glory of divine love shining from His face.

They saw the light.

It is easy to understand Peter’s reaction. He wanted to hold on to that sacred moment. “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, we will put up three shelters….” He longed to remain there, to prolong the beauty, to preserve the consolation.

But Jesus did not allow them to stay.

He led them down the mountain.

In this movement — from glory to daily life — the Gospel reveals to me the true path of discipleship. The experience of God’s light is not meant to isolate us from reality, but to strengthen us for it. The beauty of self-giving love, revealed in Christ’s radiant face, must now be recognized in the faces of those who walk beside me each day — those who love, support, challenge, and care for me in different ways.

The mountain experience prepares the heart, but the mission continues below.

Jesus invites me not only to receive His light, but to bring it to others through concrete acts of love: generosity in giving, readiness to forgive, patience in serving, and fidelity in small daily sacrifices. The true Transfiguration happens when the light I have received begins to shine through my actions.

Lord Jesus,
I thank You for allowing me to experience the light of Your love in my life, especially through the faces I encounter each day. Grant me a heart that is always open to receive Your love anew and the courage to carry it into the ordinary paths of life through faithful service.

Amen.

Abraham was called to leave his homeland and go to a land God would show him. He was asked to leave the familiar — his security, his culture, his plans — and step into the unknown. With deep trust in God’s providence, he obeyed. He believed that if God called him, God would also provide for him along the journey. His faith was not based on seeing the destination, but on trusting the One who called him.

In the Gospel, Jesus reveals His identity as the beloved Son of the Father. At the Transfiguration, His glory is manifested — a glimpse of what is to come. It is a moment of light, clarity, and consolation. Peter, overwhelmed by the beauty of the experience, says, “Lord, it is good for us to be here.” He even suggests building three tents, wanting to remain in that comforting moment.

But the mountain was not their final home.

Jesus did not remain in the glory of the Transfiguration. He came down the mountain. He continued toward Jerusalem. He continued toward the Cross. He continued to fulfill the will of the Father.

Christian life is not simply about enjoying spiritual consolations or remaining in comfortable places. It is an invitation to go beyond our comfort zones. It calls us to let go of the “baggage” that prevents us from seeing clearly God’s plan — our fears, attachments, resentments, unhealthy attitudes.

The Lenten season invites us to be like Abraham — to trust completely. It invites us to be transfigured into the likeness of Christ by stepping out of comfort, forgiving those who hurt us, letting go of unnecessary behaviors, and choosing love over pride.

Lent also calls us to confront our fears. There is a saying: Faith is not the absence of fear; it is the courage to move forward despite fear. Abraham surely felt afraid when he left everything behind. Jesus, in His humanity, must have felt the weight of what awaited Him. Yet both moved forward because they trusted the Father’s presence.

We too are called to continue God’s mission. To do so, we must “let go and let God.” We must conquer fear and embrace the challenges before us. We are called to say “yes” each day — yes to trust, yes to surrender, yes to love.

As Fr. Palau reminds us: It is not seeing that leads us to believe; it is believing that allows us to see. Faith means trusting before we fully understand. It means opening ourselves to the work of the Spirit within us, allowing God to transform what seems impossible into grace.

If we truly believe that God is with us, then we can walk through uncertainty with peace. We can descend from our mountains of comfort and embrace our mission. And in doing so, we become a blessing — and a blessing to others.

May this Lenten journey transfigure our hearts and strengthen our trust.

The Word of God today strips away any illusion that the spiritual life is merely inward or private. Through the prophet Isaiah, the Lord reveals that the fast He desires is a life opened to others: bread shared, the afflicted welcomed, the vulnerable clothed. Only then does light break forth.

The psalm portrays the just person as a light in darkness—gentle, merciful, and generous. Saint Paul reminds us that the Gospel is not transmitted through cleverness or strength, but through weakness surrendered to the power of the Spirit. Finally, Jesus names the vocation of His disciples: to be salt that disappears and light that gives itself away.

Together, these texts speak of a hidden yet transformative holiness.

2. Interiorizing the Mystery (Carmelite Perspective)

In the Carmelite tradition, contemplation is not an escape from the world but a way of inhabiting it differently. To remain in God’s presence is to allow Him to purify our intentions, detach us from ourselves, and widen our hearts.

Isaiah’s call challenges us in formation: our prayer, fasting, and silence must shape how we relate to others. If our ascetic practices do not lead to greater compassion, patience, and availability, they remain incomplete.

Psalm 112 reflects the fruit of a contemplative life: stability of heart. The just person fears no evil news because their trust is rooted in God. This inner freedom is essential for Carmel. It is the fruit of long fidelity, hidden sacrifice, and trust learned in the darkness.

Saint Paul’s weakness mirrors the Carmelite path of littleness. God works not through our competence, but through our consent. When we accept our poverty, God becomes our strength.

To be salt and light, then, is not primarily about doing more, but about belonging more fully to God. From that belonging flows a quiet, self-forgetting service.

3. Discernment for Formation

For those in Carmelite formation, these readings invite honest self-examination:

• Does my prayer make me more available to others, or more withdrawn into myself?

• Where is God asking me to move from external observance to interior truth?

• Do I trust the Spirit to work through my weakness, or do I still rely on myself?

• In what concrete ways is my life becoming light for my community?

Carmel forms not performers of holiness, but friends of God whose lives silently speak of Him.

4. Prayerful Response

Lord, You call us to be light,
yet You hide us in silence.
Detach us from ourselves,
so that Your love may pass freely through us.
May our prayer become charity,
our silence become listening,
and our lives become places
where others encounter Your presence.

The readings for this Sunday speak profoundly about humility in the spirit of the Beatitudes. The First Reading invites us to seek the Lord in humility. The Psalm assures us that God is close to the lowly and attentive to those who place their trust in Him. In the Second Reading, Saint Paul reminds the Corinthians that most believers did not come from the upper classes, but from among the lowly and the ordinary. Indeed, God looks upon our littleness with tenderness and grants us a special place in His heart. He knows our concerns and faithfully provides for our needs.

In the Gospel, Jesus appears as the new Moses. He brings the Law to fulfillment by loving God with all His heart, mind, and soul, and by loving His neighbor as Himself. This becomes the new rule of life for His disciples. By living this commandment of love, we make God present in the lives of others, especially among the poor and those on the margins.

As I recall the life of our Father Founder, Blessed Francisco Palau, I recognize in him a concrete and compelling witness to this Gospel way of life. His spirituality was rooted in a mystical union of love for God and love for neighbor. This is beautifully reflected in the Beatitudes: the first express our relationship with God, while the latter call us into loving responsibility toward others. As his daughter, I can truly say that his life embodies the Beatitudes in a unique and prophetic way. I feel deeply blessed to live his charism of loving the Church through a life of love for God and for His people.

As children of Fr. Palau, we are reminded that prayer must always be accompanied by action. From his experience of finding God in the solitude of the mountains, and through his passionate love for the Church, the Beatitudes can be interpreted in the light of his life and teachings:

• Blessed are the solitary contemplatives, for they shall come to know intimately the heart of the Church.

• Blessed are the lovers of God and neighbor, for they shall see the face of God in every human being.

• Blessed are the obedient children of the Church, for they shall inherit the strength to renew and reform faith.

• Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for justice in the Church, for they shall bring hope amid ignorance and sacrilege.

• Blessed are the tenderhearted, for they shall care for the marginalized, the sick, and those who feel abandoned by God.

• Blessed are the missionaries of truth, for they shall shine as lights in a challenging world.

• Blessed are those who find beauty in devotion to Mary, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, for they shall be sheltered beneath her mantle.

• Blessed are those who are persecuted, for they shall be rewarded for their faithful service to God.

Truly, the life of Blessed Francisco Palau inspires us to live the spirit of the Beatitudes with confidence and hope. It reminds us that the all-powerful God stands on the side of the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, those who hunger and thirst for holiness, the merciful, the pure of heart, the peacemakers, and those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake.

In conclusion, we are invited to examine ourselves honestly: What is my understanding of the Beatitudes? Do I truly live their spirituality in my daily life? Am I grounded in the teaching of Jesus to love God and my neighbor? How can I grow more deeply in living the Beatitudes and give authentic witness to the Gospel through my love and service to others?

Isaiah speaks of a people who walked in darkness and have seen a great light. This is not the sudden light of spectacle, but the dawning light that comes when God chooses to dwell in forgotten places—Zebulun, Naphtali, Galilee of the nations. God’s glory does not begin in the centre of power, but on the margins. This is deeply Carmelite: God reveals Himself where nothing seems impressive, where the land is poor, shadowed, and humble.

The Psalm allows us to hear the inner echo of that prophecy: “The Lord is my light and my help.” For Carmel, light is not primarily intellectual clarity but an interior assurance. The psalmist does not ask for many things—only one: to live in the house of the Lord, to behold His beauty. This is the Carmelite desire par excellence: not to do much, not to possess much, but to remain, to gaze, to dwell in God’s presence until His light reshapes the heart.

Saint Paul, in the second reading, reveals what happens when we lose this inner unity. Divisions arise when Christ is no longer the centre, when identity is built on belonging, labels, or personal preferences. Carmel teaches that unity begins inside, in a heart simplified and recollected. A divided heart inevitably produces a divided community. Paul’s call is therefore contemplative before it is moral: return to the one Christ who was crucified, the only source of true communion.

In the Gospel, this light finally takes flesh. Jesus settles in Galilee, fulfilling Isaiah’s prophecy. He does not begin with miracles but with a simple invitation: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.” Repentance here is not fear-driven; it is a change of direction, a turning of the heart toward the light that is already near.

When Jesus calls the fishermen, He interrupts ordinary life. Nets, boats, even family are left behind—not because they are evil, but because the light has revealed a greater belonging. In Carmelite terms, this is detachment: not rejection, but freedom. They follow at once, because the call resonates with something already stirring within them.

Finally, Jesus goes through Galilee teaching, proclaiming, and healing. Contemplation does not close us in on ourselves; it sends us out quietly transformed. The one who has seen the light becomes, almost without realizing it, a bearer of light for others.

Today’s Word invites us to ask, very simply:

• Where am I still walking in darkness?

• What nets am I holding that keep my hands full and my heart divided?

• Do I desire, like the psalmist, one thing only: to behold the beauty of the Lord?

In the silence of Carmel, we learn that light is not seized—it is received. And once received, it gently teaches us how to walk, how to follow, and how to love.
