“I was left alone on the mountain, and having received the mission, I prepared to fulfil it faithfully. Alone? Oh, no, not alone! I have always at my left a shadow which follows me on watch; and when I am asleep, it covers me with its black veil and protects me! And that shadow is the cloak with which my Beloved shelters me”

(Fr. Palau, My Relationships 1,21)

Can you imagine any moment that your shadow would abandon you? Wherever you, it follows you. In times of heat, of difficulties, it is even closer to you, more visible. During night, when you are asleep, it is still with you, covering you as if it was a warm cloak.

This was experience of Palau with the Church: he believed not only that She exists, but that Her existence is so very close to his the way a shadow is close to an object that it reflects. The two move together, cannot be separated. It was the same experience of a Psalmist when he said: “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust’. Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday”.

We are also invited to experience this kind of love of our Spouse. He is with us always, we are never left alone. We can leave our guard down knowing that He will be the one to protect and shelter us. We can got out of our commodities, live without fear, and focus in fulfilling faithfully our mission.

Invitation for silence: Imagine yourself walking, accompanied always by your shadow. Or asleep, covered by your Beloved with a cloak. Rejoice in this warm feeling of never being left alone.
