When we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family, we often imagine a home filled with peace, light, and quiet harmony. Yet today’s Gospel presents a very different image, depicting the Holy Family on the move—fleeing in the night, surrounded by fear, uncertainty, and danger. The Child Jesus is in danger; Mary must leave behind everything she knows; and Joseph is entrusted with the responsibility of protecting his family.
The Holy Family does not live in a protected or sheltered space; they inhabit a reality very similar to our own. They are given no explanations and no guarantees, only a message from God and the courage to obey it. Joseph rises in the night and sets out on a journey toward an unknown destination. His obedience is simple, silent, and trusting. Like Joseph, Mary walks this path without fully understanding. She carries the Child in her arms and holds many unanswered questions in her heart. Yet she does not resist the road that lies ahead. She chooses trust over fear and surrender over control.
The Holy Family teaches us that faith is not the absence of darkness, but the courage to move forward even when the path ahead is unclear. In this light, they reveal a spirituality of everyday life. They do not perform extraordinary deeds; they simply love, protect, listen, wait, and persevere. Holiness grows quietly in these hidden moments, in fidelity to God within ordinary responsibilities. As Saint Teresa of the Child Jesus reminds us: “Holiness consists simply in doing God’s will and being just what God wants us to be.”
For families today, this Gospel becomes a gentle invitation. In the midst of worries, instability, and daily struggles, do we still trust that God is present? Do we believe that He works not only through great events, but also through our small acts of love, patience, and faithfulness? Saint Teresa teaches us the simplicity of this path when she says: “To pick up a pin for love can convert a soul.” In God’s eyes, nothing done with love is ever small.
The Holy Family of Nazareth shows us that God does not wait for perfect conditions. He chooses to dwell in fragile homes, uncertain journeys, and hearts that dare to trust. Their path is quiet, hidden, and demanding, yet it is filled with God’s presence.
May the Feast of the Holy Family help our families, especially our great Carmelitas Misioneras Teresianas family, to learn this humble way of holiness: listening, trusting, and loving in the ordinary moments of life. Then, even in darkness, we can walk forward with confidence, knowing that God is with us.
