BECOMING BREAD: 20th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

BECOMING BREAD: 20th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

It is difficult to conceive what Jesus says,  “I am the living bread that came down from heaven…” How a simple bread become the Body of Jesus? Bread on its own essence satisfies the hunger of our body. It has a power to transform itself into the Body of Jesus. It is difficult to grasp…

Let us reverse the sequence – instead of Jesus, let us put ourselves in the position of Him. Imagine we are saying the same words of Jesus, “Hi friend!, I am the bread of life who came down from heaven, whoever eats my flesh will have an eternal life”. Hala! For sure, those who hear these words, will be shocked and perhaps they will tells us, „what kind of bread did you brought for us?” Or question us, „are you Okey?” The Jews were shocked upon hearing that from Jesus and they began to argue among themselves, “How can this man give us bread of life?” We might sense that they question the identity of Jesus, because in their opinion about themselves they are learned persons and no one is greater but them alone. They just know what Jesus can do and what he cannot. And in real life these things also happen in us. People tend to judge us not looking at the depth of our heart. Well, that’s life.

Let’s question our faith. Do we believe Jesus, the living  bread? Again the gospel tells us that there is nothing impossible for God. All is possible for those who believe. Bread cannot be Jesus, but he can become bread for us which we always commemorate during the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. Man cannot become God but God became man in the incarnation, by the power of God’s word.

In the Eucharist, bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus not because of the word of the priest during the consecration but by the very word of Jesus Himself- the transubstantiation.

We may not be a bread but we can become bread to others imitating Jesus, broken and shared for us so that we may have life.

Today and always, at the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, let us consecrate ourselves to the creative power of God’s word and allow it to transform us according to the gracious plan and providence. Let us make the Eucharist the center of our life.
